The First Steps of a Fledgling Dynasty

Week 1 has already been and gone, in fact we’re already one game in to week 2 and I still haven’t reviewed the draft! Seeing as the the roster is looking a tad different already I thought it was about time I did something about this.

So here we go! The draft, who I picked, why I picked them and why it was the wrong pick.

My main aim going in to the draft was to try stick to ‘my guy’ players and ignore the rankings generated on the app but our IDP scoring was all over the shop during the draft and so I caved and picked up some LB’s. Pretty good LB’s mind you so not disappointed with how that turned out.

The original plan was to stack up on TEs in the first few rounds but we reduced the slots from 2 to 1 just before the draft so that plan went out of the window!

Picking at 7, first 10 rounds went as follows. Don’t forget that our scoring isn’t standard – QB’s are move valuable and IDP are comparable to offensive players.

Right off the bat, nailed the WR’s. All my favourite RB’s went before I had a shot at them so was happy to load up here instead. I was always going OBJ with my first pick so was pretty pleased to see him there! Adams was an awesome 2nd round pick and I couldn’t pass up AB in the third (back when he was a Raider).

David Montgomery was the RB I most wanted from the rookies so grabbed him in the 4th and had no qualms taking Damien Williams in the 5th – not sure how many season’s he’ll give RB1 numbers for but you have to take a punt at winning the inaugural season!

Mahomes and Mayfield went 1,2 which was fine given the scoring, with Wentz and Rodgers going before I decided to swing for the fences with Murray (2 baseball references already, you’ll be glad to know I’ve run out of things I know about baseball) in the 5th. Pretty happy with how he looked week 1 but I made sure to pick up another good QB later in the draft.

Juice in the 7th was probably not a great pick on reflection but think he can have an awesome few years with Baker and OBJ and he’s still only 26.

Martinez and Jaylon Smith anchor my LB slots and I’m pretty pleased with how that looks. I’d forgotten I picked Bosa in the 10th!

Might as well chuck in some notable picks that I was disappointed to miss out on in between my picks so you get an idea of what I was thinking

1.07 OBJ

  • Nick Chubb
  • Aaron Donald
  • Darius Leonard

Big fan of Chubb and would have taken him, Donald or Leonard at the 2.05 I think.. Adams is pretty good though..

2.05 Davante Adams

  • Mike Evans
  • Dalvin Cook
  • Travis Kelce
  • Kerryon Johnson
  • Aaron Jones

Would have loved any of these guys at the 3.07 but wasn’t to be, it was AB..

3.07 AB

  • George Kittle

4.05 David Montgomery

  • Amari Cooper
  • Marlon Mack
  • Miles Sanders
  • DJ Moore
  • Christian Kirk
  • Chris Godwin

That round just hurt 😦

5.07 Damien Williams

  • Calvin Ridley
  • Chris Carson
  • JJ Watt

Was a sneaky round for good picks and so I went all in on Kyler!

6.05 Kyler Murray

  • Devin Bush
  • Khalil Mack
  • Leighton Vander Esch
  • Evan Engram
  • Quinnen Williams

Stupid Tomlin picking all the rookies I wanted to pick in later rounds! That run may also explain the Jarvis Landry pick a bit where I just wanted to grab a ‘my guy’! Wow that round was brutal.

7.07 Jarvis Landry

  • MVS

8.05 Blake Martinez

  • D Law
  • Calais Campbell
  • Roquan Smith
  • Ed Oliver
  • Devin White
  • Tyler Boyd

9.07 Jaylon Smith

  • TJ Hockenson

Still happy with those linebackers but damn did missing Hockenson suck!

At this point I was worried I’d miss all of the rookies I wanted and so grabbed Bosa

10.05 Nick Bosa

Phew! Think I’ll save you the trauma of 40 rounds of that (think I might burst in to tears if I see all the picks again) and just acknowledge that I had more ‘my guys’ than roster slots which was causing some heartache!

All in all I was happy with the draft but I’d certainly change it up knowing what I know now (such as how the scoring works!) but we were all in the same boat and it’s started which is the main thing!

There have been a plethora of trades and waivers since then so I’ll try and get those up before RedZone on Sunday as I’d like to look back on the post next week to see how it panned out. Fingers crossed I have a better week 2.. which reminds me I ought to post the week 1 line up. So little time, so much football!
